OPEN WORKPLACE · MODEL AND EXPERIMENTAL PROTOCOL

Agents are events. The Workplace is the state.

Providers supply execution. A Workplace owns continuity.

Open Workplace defines shared responsibilities for durable human-agent workplaces and the independent experimental `open-workplace/0.2-draft` protocol for resolving them. Four semantic primitives, one objective-bounded context and three regions of authority preserve ownership without turning one implementation into a universal ontology.

Execution ends; owned Material remains. The Projection stays derived, and the external authority is never absorbed by the Workplace.

PLATE 1 · ORTHOGONAL REGIONS

One region keeps history. It is not the provider’s.

The provider may remember the session. The Workplace must preserve owned context.

PLATE 2 · SHARED TERMS

Responsibilities first. Product nouns stay in Profiles.

Open Workplace shares only the terms needed to recover ownership, provenance and authority. Home, Member, Desk, Room, Meeting, Equipment, Site and Route belong to the Endroit Profile, not this model.

Workplace

A declared durable boundary within which owned context and relationships can be resolved.

responsibility boundary

Workspace

An execution or editing scope; it may provide evidence but does not establish a Workplace.

responsibility execution scope

Profile

A versioned mapping from shared responsibilities to one implementation.

responsibility implementation

Source

Content declared authoritative by an identified owner for one responsibility.

responsibility authority

Projection

A rebuildable representation derived from Sources for a consumer.

responsibility presentation

Material

Addressable content whose owner and durable state can be determined.

responsibility durability

Relationship

A declared connection to another authority without transferred ownership or permission.

responsibility reach

Resolved Workplace Context

The objective-bounded result containing relevant Sources, Material, Relationships, limits and conflicts.

responsibility orientation

Provenance

Information sufficient to recover a claim’s Source and correction owner.

responsibility traceability

Authority

The right to establish a claim or authorize an effect; access alone is not authority.

PLATE 3 · INDEPENDENT SEMANTICS

Durability is a statechart. Acceptance and delivery are not states.

Execution produces candidates outside durable truth. Retain and archive change Material durability; acceptance records judgment on a revision, completion evaluates a contract, and delivery reports an external observation.

Material durability transitions with their events and guards
fromeventguardto

retainedarchive[human request ∧ mutation scope]archived
durability
ephemeral · retained · archived · Whether Material persists in an owner’s set.
currentness
current · superseded · withdrawn · Whether a claim is current for its owner.
acceptance
exact revision + human authority · A recorded human judgment, not publication or completion.
completion
contract + exact revision + evidence · Relative to a contract; invalidated when the revision changes.
external effect
intended · attempted · partial · failed · observed · Delivery is an observation, never a Material state.

PLATE 4 · EXECUTION EVENTS

Switch the executor. Resolve the same Workplace.

Workplace region H*

  • A human enters

execution region editor, terminal, direction and judgment

Intent and consent remain human responsibilities.

  • An agent executes · provider A

execution region model, tools, sandbox and session state

Its output begins outside durable Workplace truth.

  • Another agent executes · provider B

execution region different model, tools and cache

It resolves the same owned Sources without receiving provider A’s transcript.

PLATE 5 · CONTAINMENT ≠ OWNERSHIP

Drawn inside. Owned outside.

The checkout sits on the Workplace’s disk; its source, history and permissions never move. Physical containment does not transfer semantic ownership.

The same rule protects every boundary: a Projection never replaces its Source, and a Relationship declares access without granting consent. The grammar is small because each rule refuses one convenient confusion.

PLATE 6 · ORIENTATION

An honest agent has four answers.

candidate
Evidence suggests a boundary; no valid declaration establishes it.
resolved
Relevant owners, Sources and authority are established for the objective.
degraded
Static authority stays clear while optional machinery is unavailable.
ambiguous
Conflicting or missing authority prevents safe interpretation.

Explicit limits beat guessed owners.

PLATE 7 · PROFILES

Shared responsibilities. Concrete bindings.

A Profile owns vocabulary, discovery, schemas and projections. Inspect the bindings implemented by the qualified local Endroit release candidate forendroit/0.10 targeting open-workplace/0.2-draft:

Workplace
A declared durable boundary within which owned context and relationships can be resolved.
candidate: WORKPLACE.md in the local endroit/0.10 release candidate
Workspace
An execution or editing scope; it may provide evidence but does not establish a Workplace.
candidate: an observed provider session, editor scope or Git worktree; never a declaration
Profile
A versioned mapping from shared responsibilities to one implementation.
candidate: PROFILE.md in the local endroit/0.10 release candidate
Source
Content declared authoritative by an identified owner for one responsibility.
candidate: owner-marked Markdown Documents and Fragments
Projection
A rebuildable representation derived from Sources for a consumer.
candidate: generated AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md, Skills and rendered documentation
Material
Addressable content whose owner and durable state can be determined.
candidate: owned Documents; Artifacts add optional validation contracts
Relationship
A declared connection to another authority without transferred ownership or permission.
candidate: Site and Route Documents; Checkout is a derived local address
Resolved Workplace Context
The objective-bounded result containing relevant Sources, Material, Relationships, limits and conflicts.
candidate: an in-memory ResolvedWorkplace, separate from host observations
Provenance
Information sufficient to recover a claim’s Source and correction owner.
candidate: Source refs, revisions and digests in generated projections
Authority
The right to establish a claim or authorize an effect; access alone is not authority.
candidate: explicit human authority plus observed host and external permissions

Home, Member, Desk, Room, Meeting, Equipment, Site, Route and Work Resolution remain Endroit extensions, not normative behavior in open-workplace/0.2-draft. With only one observed Profile, cross-Profile conformance remains unproven. This local candidate is not yet published or deployed.

PLATE 8 · SCOPE

The chart has no motor.

The protocol governs interpretation. It does not:

Runtimes, editors, repositories and providers keep their own authority. They can participate precisely because none of them is asked to become the source of truth.
